Keratosis Palmaris also known as Palmoplantar keratoderma is a group of skin disorders that are thought to be primarily hereditary. These disorders cause the skin on the palms and soles of feet to thicken. The thickening is a result of an overproduction of keratin protein that leads to the excessive growth of the stratum corneum (hyperkeratosis).

Types of Palmoplantar Keratoderma

This group of skin disorders is subdivided into types. There are inherited variations, and within those, three distinct types that differ in epidermal development. The three types are diffuse PPK, focal PPK, and punctate keratoderma.

Diffuse Palmoplantar Keratoderma

This type causes the skin to turn yellow and thicken consistently across the entire surface of the skin on palms and soles. This type of PPK can start as early as the first few months of life.

Focal Palmoplantar Keratoderma

This type of PPK creates localized areas of thickened skin. Onset occurs within the first 2 years of life. These areas are usually those that experience higher levels of pressure or friction.

Punctate Keratoderma

This type is caused by concentrated hyperkeratosis which leads to small bumps or nodules. These small bumps may cover the whole skin surface or perhaps only certain areas. The onset of this disorder is anywhere between the ages of 10 and 70.

What treatment options are available for keratosis palmaris diseases? Treatments are few and unproven, but most suggest a regularly and heavy moisturizing routine. Also, to avoid dry skin it is important to use mild soaps and cleansers. Some people find that the best keratosis palmaris treatment is a mixture of a few.
