Information about Burn Scars and Treatment

by Samara Al Romaithi

Burn injuries have grown tremendously within recent years, and are considered a serious problem. Thankfully it has been in these past several years that medical professionals have truly begun to realize and understand the problems associated with burns. According to statistics, at least 50 percent of burn accidents can be prevented. Unfortunately, until we raise awareness and educate people on burn safety, we continue to deal with the after effects of burn wounds which are scars.

Types of Burns

The severity and type of burn scarring depends on the type of burn. Several factors are used in determining the severity of the burn, including the person's age, size and depth of the burn. Most commonly, burns are categorized by depth into degrees from first to third. First degree burns affect the surface layer of skin, the epidermis. These cause pain, redness and swelling. These are the least serious and it is possible to prevent burn scars with proper treatment. The treatment begins with a flush or soak of the injured area which then should be covered by a sterile non adhesive bandage to be protected from friction or pressure. A second degree burn affects the top two layers, the epidermis and dermis, and results in redness, pain, swelling, and blisters. Damage can be done to hair follicles and sweat glands due to second degree burns. To heal burns of the second degree, you should first elevate the wound and cover it with a cool moist sterile bandage to protect it. Do not apply cold water, compresses or ointment and make sure the burn area stays clean. A third degree burn is the most serious as it affects the epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis which results in the charring or whitening of the skin, with coagulated vessels visible through the surface. These burns affect so deeply into the skin that they damage skin tissue and often cause the skin to feel numb. Treat third degree burns similarly to second degree, but make sure you get the person to a medical professional as soon as possible.

Types of Burn Scars

The process to heal burns is similar to other wound healing processes, and will almost surely result in a scar. The three major types of burn related scars are keloid, hypertrophic and contracture. Keloid scars will grow beyond the site of injury and are thick and raised. Hypertrophic scars have a very similar appearance but remain within the wound site. Contracture scars are those that cause the skin to tighten which can result in the tightening and limited mobility of underlying muscles and tendons.

Surgical Procedures

Dermabrasion and skin grafts are the two major types of surgical burn scar removal procedures. Dermabrasion is a surgical procedure to improve or minimize the appearance of scars, restore function and correct disfigurement resulting from an injury. This procedure smoothes out skin affected by scars by shaving or scraping off the top layers of skin. This can smooth the surface of the skin, but will not remove the scars. A skin graft is a surgical procedure where a piece of skin is transplanted from one area to another area of the body. These procedures are done under general anesthesia and require 6 weeks to a few months to heal. Most grafts are successful, but some may require additional surgery if they do not heal properly.
